Although propane furnaces burn relatively clean, like most appliances they need to be cleaned from time to time. Propane furnaces will build up soot eventually and it should be cleaned out on a regular basis to increase the life of the furnace.
Since you are working with a propane heater, and you are aware that it can emit a deadly carbon monoxide, it is better to have the cleaning done by a professional unless you have complete faith in your ability to clean the furnace. Although you should not be working with any gas hook-ups, accidents do happen, so be careful.
If you have never done a propane furnace clean before, it is best to follow a step by step method. If you have a screwdriver, a small vacuum cleaner, a ratchet set and the attachment to your vacuum that will get you deep into the furnace, you can get started.
There is a panel on the very front of the panel which gives you the pathway to the inside that needs to be cleaned. There should be a release button which will pop the panel off. If not, use your screwdriver to gently pry it off.
Do not cut the furnace off quite yet. First, among the flames, see if you can tell if any of the burner holes have any blocks. Do not try to clean it with the furnace on. Now is the time to cut it off and make sure it is cut off from your circuit breaker for safety, as well.
You need to gently clean the burners with the small vacuum cleaner. If you have to, attach the long pipe to give you enough length to get you to the back of the furnace, so you can clean there. If you run into a situation where you think there is more cleaning to be done than you can do, stop. Reattach the front panel and contact someone to come clean it for you.
If you are doing okay so far, get your ratchet set to clean the furnace blower. Reportedly, most nuts need a 7/16 socket. Take the two bolts that you see holds the blower and take it out of the furnace. Then you will see fins within the blower with the brush, making sure you don’t bend them.
Once you have done that, you can get to the easy part. Inspect the filters to see if they have any debris that should be cleared off. They can be replaced when you are done. You have cleaned your propane furnace yourself.
