Everybody experiences power outages from time to time. For some people, like those caught in hurricane or tornado alleys, those outages can last more than a day. If you are in a situation like this, or have encountered the disadvantage of having to take a cold shower, there is an answer.
You could consider looking into a portable propane generator. Most people are familiar with generators being fueled by either natural gas or oil, but since propane has been found to be a safe, effective, relatively inexpensive, odor-free alternative, they have become more popular in recent years.
One of the hurdles to face is trying to decide how big a generator you would need. Generally, the portable models are only going to last as long as the wattage you draw from it. In other words, sometimes the smaller ones only last a few hours. The question is can you figure out, within reason, what wattage is used by your necessary appliances? The rest can be unplugged until you need them.
Most appliances come with a sticker attached that will give you an idea of what wattage they draw. And most portable propane generators are geared to produce approximately 7,000-10,000 watts. These portable generators are always good to have around for short outages in reasonably sized homes.
However, if you have a home that is in the 5,000+ square footage range, a small propane generator is probably not going to be of much use to you unless you want it in the garage or a small work room that does not have electricity running to it. In that case, you can work for several hours off it because there is no wattage draw except what you are using.
But to heat, warm the water, provide air conditioning, etc. in a home that large, you would need to look at having a larger system physically installed in the home. That would be a much more efficient, but costly idea.
But, for things around the house and for short term emergencies, a portable propane generator can be your answer. Anyone who had one during an outage would be singing their praises. That’s for sure.
