If you talk to two different people about converting your propane gas grill to natural gas, it is very likely that you will get two different answers. It seems this question prompts a lot of “no, you can’t” and “yes, you can” remarks.
You will actually find very little about it, however. Depending on the type of propane grill you have, you should be able to do it with a conversion kit. People who are very handy around the house say they can do it in under a half hour. Remember, those are people who are handy. Not all of us are.
There is a good reason to convert and a good reason not to. If your propane gas grill is performing properly, it is probably going to be more efficient at distributing the BTU’s evenly across the grill. It is a clean-burning fuel and does not clog the atmosphere like a charcoal grill will.
If you have lost the efficiency in your propane gas grill, converting to natural gas may not be that bad an idea. Natural gas is cheaper, after all. As always, there is a hitch. You have to already have a source of natural gas running to your house. You would have if you cook with natural gas.
You might also want to take a good look at where you keep your grill. Propane gas grills have the tank right beneath the grill, so you can use it where ever you like. If you try to convert it to natural gas, it will have to be hooked up to the source of the gas that is going into the house. This might make the whole idea not workable for you.
Then again, if everything is working in your favor like the kitchen wall abuts the deck and you can slip your grill right there for ease of hook-up, you are on your way. Remember, if you have a problem with a leak or a fire from your natural gas grill, you might have a fire right at your kitchen wall. One homeowner had his kitchen wall catch fire three times because he left the grill going and left the house. Don’t try that.
