There are so many grills on the market today; you hardly know what to look for. However, if what you want is a propane grill that will do what you want it to do; here are some tips that might help you with your shopping.

Tip#1: Do not buy a grill just because it has a higher BTU. That merely describes the area over which the heat can be distributed. There are better grills on the market with lower BTU’s that actually do a better job with heat distribution.

Tip#2: Watch out that you don’t buy a natural gas grill by mistake. A natural gas grill requires that you have to refill your tank at a natural gas distributor. It is not the same as the propane tanks that you trade in at the convenience store. Buying a converter to make it propane can add $75-$100 to your price tag.

Tip#3: If you are going to spend a lot of money on a grill because it is a name brand only, add the $30-$45 dollars for the cover. There is no good reason to buy a name brand product at the price they charge, which can be $5,000-$15,000 and more, and leave it outside for the elements to destroy.

Tip #4: If you want to play the role of the guy you see on TV who is armed with all the attachments and toys, add $150-$200 to the price. Try to find a grill you want that has the attachments already on it. Then, wait for a sale on the toys.

Tip#5: The toys can include everything from additional burners and shelves to special tongs to hold shrimp and long tongs for flipping meat so you don’t get burned. There are long brushes to clean you grill as you go and more. If you want them all, add them up by checking on the Internet before you go out, or you might find yourself having an unwanted shopping frenzy.

Figure out what you need, and buy just that. It’s always good to have an extra tank in case your gas empties during cooking, but it is not the cost of a replacement. Check it out. If you can afford it and you are cooking for a family, you might want to get it.

Tip#6: If the majority of the cooking is done for a family of four, try to find a unit that will do the job with a side burner. You do not have to cook the whole meal on the grill, but a side burner is always good to have if you are only having a few things with the meal.
