You’ve done your research and you are tired of cleaning up after that rusted out charcoal grill you have been babying along. It’s time to take the plunge, and get a propane gas grill. With a clean burning fuel and the grill being ready to cook on the minute you push the button, why buy anything else?

Now, how do you decide what propane grill to buy? It’s easy. Before you foolishly head out that door, the first thing to do is set your budget limit. This includes the price of the propane tank you are going to need and any accessories that go with it. When that’s done, get tough. Make the decision you will not, under any circumstances or how good the salesperson’s pitch is, go higher.

Next you decide if you want a name brand or a store brand. Obviously a name brand is going to cost more, especially if you have to get it from a small hardware store with little negotiating power. You can get different sizes and BTU outputs on name brands, but it might have to be ordered whereas the store brand is sitting right there to take home.

The answer is easy here, too. It’s known as being able to get spare parts. Let’s assume you want to maintain the propane grill in good condition, but spare parts will eventually be needed even if you succeed. Most store brands roll them in and roll them out, and that’s the end of ever being get spare parts say three years down the road.

How about what metal the grill is made of? Usually even the best come in either cast iron, stainless steel or cast aluminum. Although cooks prefer stainless steel, some parts are not that and become rusty. All in all, if you are the average backyard barbecue guy, cast aluminum is the way to go.

BTU’s have anything to do with it? Not really. Some small BTU grills even distribute heat better than large ones. By the way, that’s all BTU stands for – heat distribution. It is not something that you have to go to the biggest grill for.

Accessories are the next issue. Given the cost of the propane grill you have your eye on, how much money is left for the toys? Really, will you ever need the rotisserie? Multi-shelves, maybe. Side burner, maybe. Cleaning tools, definitely. This is also an easy decision to make.

After all that, is the warranty sufficient? They are all different. If you look into the warranty, and compare it to the grill you have your heart now set on. Are you happy with it? If it all is within your budget, go for it. Oh, don’t forget, some stores offer free propane tanks, some don’t. Negotiate.
