People have been using propane gas for years without even thinking about whether it was safe. Remember that little gas tank under your barbecue grill? Where would we be without those? Well, we would be back to the slow to start, blow up in your face, charcoal grills.
Charcoal grills had great taste, but some believed they weren’t healthy. Nor safe. They could still be burning long after the football game was over and you were in bed. What if they got knocked over? You turn off the gas on a propane heater, under your grill and stove, when you are done with it.
Propane gas heaters for the house use the same concept. They are usually meant for the outdoors or large open spaces, though. Because they need circulating air to properly function, putting an unvented propane gas heater in your home can be dangerous.
Remember the fires we heard about that were caused by propane space heaters years ago. Most people have quit buying them because they were considered unsafe. However, if the users had followed the directions, most likely nothing would have happened.
But, they were never designed for a small bedroom all night while you are sleeping if you have children or animals that could knock them over, or if they have no more air to draw from. That can be very dangerous and should be avoided.
Granted, they can be dangerous. Some county governments no longer allow gas barbecue grills on people’s decks. At homes on the ocean, people would think nothing of firing them up and then letting that “gentle ocean breeze” cause havoc while they sit inside watching television.
One house in particular had the gas grill hooked up to the same gas line that went to his stove and oven. He turned the grill on, and for some reason, left to visit his neighbor. When he came back, there had been a leak in the hook-up. The unlimited amount of gas available to the grill allowed it to set the whole wall on fire, and it took out his kitchen, which was at the back of the house so no one saw it until people saw smoke.
Even more amazing is this same man set fire to his kitchen wall on three different occasions. Nor would he give up using gas for his heating, cooking and grill. He knew gas is safe unless there is a leak, which you can smell, and unless you do not pay attention to the directions.
